Universitas Pertamina’s Processes to Prevent Water Pollution and Respond to Environmental Incidents

Universitas Pertamina has established processes to prevent polluted water from entering drainage systems and surrounding water bodies, including pollution arising from accidents and incidents. These processes address risks from domestic wastewater, kitchen discharges and hazardous materials through separate drainage systems, wastewater treatment oversight, controlled storage and incident response procedures. Together, these measures connect day-to-day campus operations with the protection of water resources.
Universitas Pertamina separates domestic wastewater drainage from stormwater drainage to direct wastewater towards appropriate treatment and prevent it from entering rainwater channels untreated. Kitchen wastewater passes through grease traps that retain fats, oils and grease before further treatment.
Rainwater runoff is collected through separate stormwater channels and conveyed to a ground tank before being pumped to the receiving water body. Pumps housed in the flood pump room help manage accumulated runoff and reduce flood risks. Maintaining this separate route helps prevent rainwater from mixing with untreated domestic wastewater.
Universitas Pertamina reinforces these controls through dedicated personnel monitoring wastewater treatment plant operations and effluent testing every three months by a laboratory operated by the local environmental authority.
Operational monitoring helps identify treatment problems, while laboratory results provide a basis for assessing effluent quality against applicable standards. Circular Letter No. 0010B/UPER-WRP.4/SE/II/2025 requires the facilities management unit to coordinate treatment, maintenance, testing and corrective action with the wastewater treatment plant operator when effluent fails to meet the required standards.
Universitas Pertamina also addresses the risk of accidental pollution from hazardous materials and hazardous waste. The SOP for the Management and Handling of Hazardous and Toxic Materials, SOP-UP-SPMI/04/06/29/R00, effective from 8 December 2023, requires compatible, watertight containers, secondary containment and temporary storage protected from rainwater with impermeable flooring. These controls help contain potential leaks and prevent hazardous substances from being carried into campus drains or nearby water bodies.
When a spill, leak or suspected pollution incident occurs, Universitas Pertamina requires immediate reporting to the responsible unit head or the Occupational Health and Safety and Eco Campus Function. Authorised personnel must secure the affected area, stop the source where safe, contain the spill and prevent it from reaching open ground or nearby water bodies. The SOP specifies the use of appropriate absorbents and labelled hazardous-waste containers for collected spills and contaminated clean-up materials. Response and corrective actions must also be documented.
Universitas Pertamina supports these procedures through its occupational health and safety management arrangements and the Health, Safety, Security and Environment Committee, formally established through Yayasan Pertamina Board of Management Decree No. Kpts-050/12A0000/2025-S0. This organisational framework assigns responsibility for managing operational hazards and environmental incidents. By combining preventive infrastructure, routine monitoring and defined response procedures, Universitas Pertamina addresses both everyday discharges and accidental releases that could pollute water systems.
