Universitas Pertamina Provides Local Food Producers with Access to University Technology and Laboratory Expertise to Improve Sustainable Farming Practices

Universitas Pertamina supports local farmers and food producers in accessing university facilities, laboratory capabilities, and applied technologies to improve sustainable farming practices. Through its scientific and engineering facilities, Universitas Pertamina develops technological solutions and laboratory expertise relevant to agricultural production, livestock farming, and food-related enterprises. These resources support activities such as environmental quality assessment, agricultural resource management, and the development of technologies that improve production efficiency and environmental sustainability.
Universitas Pertamina maintains several laboratories with capabilities relevant to agricultural and livestock activities, including the Integrated Chemistry Laboratory, Environmental Engineering Laboratory, Chemical Engineering Laboratory, Electrical Engineering Laboratory, among other university facilities. Their scientific and technical capabilities are relevant to laboratory testing and analysis of irrigation water, water used in livestock operations, environmental conditions, agricultural and livestock waste, and materials used in production systems, depending on available instruments and testing parameters. Laboratory testing expertise and technical collaboration can assist local farmers and food producers in assessing environmental and production-related conditions and exploring more sustainable resource management practices.
One example of direct access to university-developed technology was implemented in 2025 through a community engagement project conducted by the Electrical Engineering Department of Universitas Pertamina in collaboration with PagiFarm Bogor, a local hydroponic farming enterprise operated by CV Pagi Berkah Mandiri. The project, entitled “Synergy of Renewable Energy and Modern Agriculture: Solar Power Implementation to Improve Hydroponic Farming Performance at PagiFarm Bogor”, was conducted from April to November 2025 in Ciluar, North Bogor District, Bogor City, West Java. Led by Dr. Soni Prayogi, M.Si., together with Universitas Pertamina lecturers and students, the project involved assessing the farm’s energy needs, designing and assembling a solar photovoltaic (PV) system integrated with Internet of Things (IoT) technology using university laboratory facilities, and installing the system at PagiFarm’s production site.
The installed solar PV-IoT technology consists of solar panels, energy storage, an inverter, and digital monitoring devices that allow PagiFarm to monitor electricity consumption, temperature, and humidity. The system supports the operation of water pumps and aerators used in hydroponic cultivation, where continuous water circulation and oxygen availability are essential to production activities. Access to renewable energy technology and digital monitoring enables PagiFarm to manage energy use more efficiently and reduce dependence on conventional electricity for daily farming operations.
Universitas Pertamina also transferred practical knowledge to PagiFarm operators and participating community members through technical training on system operation, maintenance, and the use of the IoT monitoring dashboard. The training involved 25 participants, with knowledge assessment results improving between the pre-test and post-test. On 18 October 2025, the PV-IoT equipment was formally handed over to PagiFarm for independent operation and maintenance. According to the project’s final evaluation, the partner demonstrated the ability to operate the technology without daily assistance from Universitas Pertamina, while the evaluation also reported an approximately 40% reduction in electricity costs following implementation.
