SDG #12: ENSURE sustainable consumption and production patterns
Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12 focuses on ensuring sustainable consumption and production patterns.
– United Nations
Universitas Pertamina’s effort to realize responsible consumption and production involves integrating sustainability in waste management, with waste disposal being regulated and managed by professionals. The university also raises awareness among the entire Universitas Pertamina community to reduce the purchase of bottled water to minimize plastic bottle waste. Below are the activities done throughout the academic period of 2022-2023.
Universitas Pertamina is committed to ethical sourcing in its food and supplies, ensuring that all products are derived from responsibly obtained raw materials. By implementing policies that promote sustainable and fair sourcing practices, the university aims to support environmental conservation and social responsibility. This approach reflects its dedication to fostering ethical consumption patterns within its community.
Universitas Pertamina has policies, processes, and practices in place for the management of hazardous and toxic waste (B3), in line with its commitment to supporting SDG 15, which focuses on protecting life on land. The university has established clear procedures for the handling, storage, and disposal of hazardous materials, such as chemicals from laboratories or industrial operations, ensuring that all waste is managed in compliance with applicable environmental regulations. This process includes waste segregation, proper labeling, and secure storage to minimize the risk of contamination to the environment and human health.
–Temporary Hazardous Waste Storage Facility-
In addition to internal protocols, the university collaborates with third-party waste management companies. This responsible approach not only ensures compliance with national standards but also reduces the environmental impact of hazardous materials. Among the types of hazardous waste generated, the largest quantity typically comes from residual B3 sample waste, which requires special handling due to its potential environmental impact. Through these practices, Universitas Pertamina contributes to the preservation of local ecosystems and demonstrates its commitment to sustainable environmental management, setting a positive example for the community and future generations in eco-friendly waste management.
Universitas Pertamina is taking a proactive stance on sustainability by implementing a policy aimed at minimizing plastic use, particularly in the consumption of water. This initiative encourages students and staff to reduce reliance on single-use plastic bottles, promoting the use of refillable containers instead. Through this policy “Surat Edaran Pembatasan Penggunaan Air Minum Dalam Kemasan (AMDK) untuk Kegiatan Internal Universitas”, Universitas Pertamina aims to create a cleaner, greener campus while inspiring broader societal change towards more sustainable practices.
Universitas Pertamina is taking a proactive role in sustainability by implementing innovative policies aimed at minimizing the use of single-use items on campus. The university actively encourages students, faculty, and staff to move away from single-use products and use reusable alternatives, significantly reducing overall campus waste production and fostering a culture of environmental responsibility.
In line with this commitment, the university has issued a formal directive, Surat Edaran Pembatasan Pakai Air Minum Dalam Botol (AMDK) untuk Kegiatan Internal Universitas (Circular Letter on Restrictions on the Use of Bottled Drinking Water (AMDK) for Internal University Activities). This policy restricts the use of bottled water during university events and activities, further emphasizing the shift to sustainable practices. The goal is to minimize plastic waste generated from single-use water bottles, by promoting the use of refillable water containers instead. This initiative supports the university’s broader sustainability agenda, which includes reducing carbon footprint, promoting clean energy, and encouraging responsible resource consumption. Through these combined efforts, Universitas Pertamina is not only contributing to environmental preservation but also serving as a model for other institutions to follow in their pursuit of sustainability.
Universitas Pertamina has measured the amount of waste generated on campus. In the 2022/2023 academic year, the university is focusing on research initiatives that address waste management. As part of this effort, the university is conducting a project to track waste on campus.
This project aims to understand how much waste is produced at Universitas Pertamina and to identify areas for improvement. By examining the types and amounts of waste, the goal is to develop strategies to reduce waste and promote more sustainable practices.
Universitas Pertamina generated a total of 53.3 tons of waste, demonstrating its commitment to Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 12, which focuses on sustainable consumption and production patterns. This initiative highlights the university’s dedication to minimizing its environmental impact by promoting responsible waste management and reducing its ecological footprint.
Universitas Pertamina has demonstrated its commitment to SDG 12.4.1 through the publication of a sustainability report included in the Annual Report 2023. This report summarizes various initiatives and programs related to sustainable education, environment, and social innovation. Universitas Pertamina is actively involved in renewable energy, conservation, and community development programs, which are aligned with sustainability principles and support the achievement of sustainable development goals.
Through this publication, Universitas Pertamina and Pertamina Foundation affirm their commitment to transparency and public accountability. In addition to documenting program achievements, this report is also a means to communicate the campus’ contribution to the global agenda, including international conferences related to climate change and nature-based solutions. With this report, Universitas Pertamina not only meets SDG 12.4.1 standards but also encourages the implementation of sustainable practices in the education and social sectors.
