SDG #11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable

Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 focuses on making cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable.

– United Nations

Pertamina University’s commitment to realizing this sustainable goal can be seen through the activities carried out throughout the 2022-2023 academic period.

Universitas Pertamina is committed to providing public access to its library and campus publications, including books, student theses, and journal authored by both faculty members and students, as a strategic effort to enhance quality of life and disseminate knowledge.

Campus publications, including student theses and academic journals, can be accessed by the public by submitting an access request through the following link:

Through this initiative, Universitas Pertamina demonstrates its commitment to supporting the Sustainable Development Goals by providing an inclusive learning environment and encouraging community participation in academic activities. This access is expected to empower more individuals to obtain valuable information, promote innovative research, and raise awareness of the importance of knowledge in sustainable development.

Universitas Pertamina is committed to achieving Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 11 by providing free public access to green spaces. This initiative is designed to foster a healthier and more sustainable environment for the community and to offer individuals the opportunity to connect with nature. By ensuring that green spaces are accessible to everyone, Universitas Pertamina not only encourages recreation and relaxation, but also raises awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.

This initiative reflects Universitas Pertamina’s efforts to promote sustainability and social responsibility. The green spaces provided on campus serve not only as places to unwind but also as educational resources for environmental awareness. Through various programs that engage the community, the university aims to inspire visitors to protect natural resources, contribute to mitigating climate change, and foster a community that is more conscious of the importance of a clean and green environment.

Universitas Pertamina actively supports the Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing contributions to the arts and the preservation of cultural heritage. One of the tangible efforts in this area is through the UKM Kesenian Daerah and UKM Paduan Suara, which consistently showcases traditional dance and choir performance in various events, both internal and external campus.

This contribution is expected not only to strengthen cultural identity but also to enhance appreciation for the arts and cultural heritage in support of sustainable development.

Universitas Pertamina is committed to supporting the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goal, which focuses on the effort to document and preserve cultural heritage. One of the tangible contributions made is through the active role of Universitas Pertamina students as Jakarta Language Ambassadors 2023. This commitment is expected to have a positive impact on enriching and preserving Indonesian culture, while also supporting sustainable development by maintaining a strong cultural identity.

Universitas Pertamina supports SDG indicator 11.4.2 “Promote Sustainable Commuting” by providing convenient and safe bicycle parking facilities for students and staff. This facility aims to encourage the use of bicycles as an environmentally friendly transportation alternative that can reduce carbon emissions and congestion in the campus area. With the bicycle parking, the university provides a more sustainable option for the academic community in daily mobility, in line with the campus vision that supports sustainable transportation practices.

In addition, Universitas Pertamina also provides safe and comfortable pedestrian pathways along the campus area. This path facilitates pedestrians with a clean, shaded, and motor vehicle-free environment, supporting walking as a healthier and environmentally friendly form of transportation. This pedestrian facility reinforces the university’s commitment to creating a sustainable campus area and reducing dependence on motorized vehicles.

Not only that, Universitas Pertamina also provides bus stops as public transportation facilities around campus, facilitating access for students and staff who use public transportation. With this bus stop, the university encourages the use of more efficient and sustainable public transportation, reduces carbon emissions from private vehicles, and supports more environmentally friendly commuting patterns. This initiative is aligned with the university’s goal to create greener and more efficient mobility for the entire campus community.

Universitas Pertamina is committed to supporting indicator 11.4.3 by promoting remote working as a standard policy. This helps reduce employee daily commutes, which in turn reduces carbon emissions and traffic congestion. In addition, Universitas Pertamina also offers the option of a compressed work week to reduce the frequency of travel. This policy creates a flexible work environment, supports employee well-being and aligns with global sustainability goals.

Pertamina University supports the Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) indicator 11.4.5, “Affordable housing for students,” by offering accessible dormitory facilities. The on-campus accommodation, such as the Kiai Maja dormitory, provides students with affordable living arrangements, ensuring their focus remains on academic and personal growth. This housing initiative also aligns with efforts to create a more inclusive environment by offering optional dormitory stays as part of scholarship programs, such as the Generasi Juara scholarships, which cover tuition fees, living expenses, and accommodation support.

By offering these dormitories, Pertamina University reduces the financial burden on students, promoting equity in education and contributing to urban sustainability by consolidating housing near the campus. This initiative not only addresses the need for affordable student housing but also fosters community building among residents, which enhances their overall university experience.

Universitas Pertamina prioritizes pedestrian access on its campus by providing a pedestrian path of approximately 500 meters which is designed to ensure safety, comfort and accessibility for everyone, including individuals with disabilities and the elderly. The university has installed sidewalks in key areas such as bike paths, around campus buildings, and inside buildings to create a more inclusive environment. This path is equipped with ramps that are wheelchair accessible and has a slope adjustment feature to facilitate mobility for people with disabilities.

Apart from increasing pedestrian accessibility, the Universitas Pertamina initiative also encourages an environmentally friendly campus by encouraging walking, thereby reducing motor vehicle emissions. The university’s dedication to sustainability and accessibility in line with SDG 11 is supported by pedestrian entrances and well-lit walkways, which ensure that all members of the university community, regardless of physical ability, can navigate the campus safely and comfortably.

Universitas Pertamina’s refurbishment of the lower-level canteen demonstrates their dedication to establishing new structures that adhere to sustainability standards. To optimize natural light and lessen the need for artificial lighting during the day, this restoration uses transparent glass. In addition to improving the space’s visual attractiveness, the institution encourages sustainability by using less electricity thanks to this energy-efficient design.

Universitas Pertamina’s larger initiatives to include sustainable practices into campus development are reflected in this project. The institution actively promotes environmental preservation and supports SDG 11’s objectives for sustainable cities and communities by emphasizing energy-efficient construction designs. By taking these steps, the campus’s environmental impact is reduced, and resource efficiency is encouraged.

To maximize land usage and reduce environmental effect, Universitas Pertamina repurposes unused or previously built areas, a practice known as brownfield development. One instance of this is the refurbishment and conversion of the GOR building’s upper level. A new structure was constructed on the original location, and the GOR building, which had been a gymnasium, was moved in front of the Griya Legita structure. This program supports environmental stewardship by making the best use of the campus’s existing acreage and preventing the need for development on undeveloped territory.

Universitas Pertamina shows its dedication to responsible land use and resource efficiency by redeveloping previously constructed sites. Reusing unused or underutilized space promotes urban renewal, preserves green areas, and lessens the environmental impact of new construction. This strategy supports sustainable development objectives and encourages prudent resource management in accordance with SDG 11 while guaranteeing the campus’s long-term expansion.
