Universitas Pertamina’s effort in realizing this sustainable goal can be seen through efforts such as financial aid, start-up assistance and policy addressing poverty. Below are the activities done throughout the academic period of 2022-2023.
Universitas Pertamina is committed to supporting access to education by providing financial aid to low-income students. This initiative ensures that economic barriers do not hinder academic potential. Out of the university’s 3,713 students, 373 receive financial assistance, allowing them to pursue their studies and work towards a brighter future
Universitas Pertamina targets students from the bottom financial quintile through its admission program, ensuring that those from the lowest-income families have access to higher education. By offering scholarships and financial aid, the university reduces barriers and creates equal opportunities for these students. The program not only supports their enrollment but also provides resources to help them complete their studies, promoting academic success and social mobility. According to the Governance and Management Standards of Universitas Pertamina, Universitas Pertamina aims to accept and award scholarships to 5% of students who are academically outstanding and economically disadvantaged. Based on the 2017–2022 Strategic Plan, the percentage of scholarship recipients by the end of 2021 reached 25%, with a total amount of IDR 14 billion. This significantly exceeded the previous strategic plan’s target of 20%.
Universitas Pertamina is committed to expanding access to education for students from the bottom financial quintile through its targeted admission program. By focusing on students from the lowest-income families, the program provides scholarships and additional support to reduce barriers to higher education. In the 2022/2023 academic year, 90 out of 122 students from the 2019 cohort, or 74% of those receiving financial aid due to poverty, graduated on time. This initiative ensures equal opportunities and helps students achieve academic success despite economic challenges.
In addition to providing scholarships, Universitas Pertamina offers housing support for low-income students. One example is “Rumah Hasbi”, a free housing facility for selected male students facing financial hardship. Universitas Pertamina also providing dormitory for for students who receive scholarship. This initiative ensures that students receive financial aid and have access to safe and stable living conditions, helping them focus on their studies without the added burden of housing costs.
As part of its efforts to address the impact of poverty, Universitas Pertamina provides support to students who fall into the bottom 20% of the household income group. This assistance includes scholarships such as the BAZMA Scholarship, YOM Scholarship, Sobat Bumi 3T Scholarship, Ujung Negeri Scholarship, and Mitra Peduli Scholarship. These programs are specifically targeted at financially disadvantaged students, ensuring they have the resources needed to complete their education successfully and on time, empowering them to overcome economic challenges and achieve academic success.
Recognizing poverty as a global issue, Universitas Pertamina offers financial assistance to students from low and lower-middle-income countries. This support provides international students with the opportunity to pursue higher education at the university, breaking down financial barriers and fostering a more diverse, inclusive academic environment while contributing to global educational equity.
As part of its commitment to supporting local communities in overcoming poverty, Universitas Pertamina offers the “Inkubasi Bisnis Lanjutan” program. This initiatives provide valuable support to local start-ups through expert coaching, training, and access to business networks. By enhancing the competitiveness of emerging businesses, these programs empower entrepreneurs to grow and contribute to local economic development, fostering innovation and sustainability within the community.
In addition to providing training, Universitas Pertamina offers financial assistance to local start-ups through its “Inkubasi Bisnis Lanjutan”. Each participating team receives funding to help grow and develop their business. This financial support, combined with expert coaching and business networking opportunities, empowers entrepreneurs to enhance their competitiveness and contribute to the local economy.
Universitas Pertamina actively improves access to essential services for broader communities through its “LIGHT UP” program, a community service initiative focused on education about energy management, waste, and environmental sustainability. In addition, the Himpunan Mahasiswa Teknik Lingkungan (HMTL) extends support through community service activities. These programs aim to raise awareness and provide practical knowledge to help communities manage resources more effectively, promoting sustainable practices and enhancing overall well-being.
Universitas Pertamina contributes to poverty alleviation through impactful policy initiatives, including collaborations with organizations like BAZNAS. One notable effort is the involvement of the university’s faculty in conducting Economic Zakat Modeling studies and developing the Muzaki Confidence Index. These initiatives aim to optimize the distribution of zakat funds, ensuring they effectively address poverty in various communities, and provide insights to strengthen public trust and engagement in zakat contributions.
