Supporting Off-Campus Water Conservation and Responsible Water Management

Universitas Pertamina supports off-campus water conservation and responsible water management through technical assistance, assessment of alternative water sources, and community engagement. These efforts help local communities understand water-resource limitations, explore opportunities for rainwater harvesting, and adopt responsible water-use practices.
In 2025, Universitas Pertamina delivered this support through WATER FOR ALL! at Barengkok II Public Elementary School, Jasinga District, Bogor Regency. Responding to limited water availability, the programme combined groundwater assessment, assistance with school water facilities, evaluation of rainwater-harvesting potential, and free guidance on avoiding water waste in everyday sanitation activities.
The school was not connected to the municipal water network and relied on rainwater to meet sanitation needs. Students sometimes collected water from locations approximately 300–500 metres away to use the toilets. These conditions made careful management of available water and assessment of supplementary sources particularly important.

Technical Support for Managing Limited Water Resources

Universitas Pertamina’s Civil Engineering Study Programme, assessed local groundwater conditions through a geoelectrical investigation in August 2025. The investigation identified limited groundwater potential, with thin and discontinuous aquifer layers in an area dominated by low-permeability materials.
These findings informed technical recommendations for the school’s water facilities and established a clearer understanding of local resource limitations. The assessment provided a basis for water-supply planning that considered groundwater availability alongside the school’s sanitation needs.
Universitas Pertamina subsequently supported the rehabilitation and deepening of the existing well, provided a water pump, and assisted with piping to the school’s toilets. Implementation visits and coordination with school representatives supported these improvements. Water could subsequently flow into the toilet storage basins, improving access for daily sanitation.

Assessing Rainwater Harvesting as a Supplementary Source

To explore opportunities for making greater use of locally available rainfall, Universitas Pertamina assessed rainwater-harvesting potential using rainfall data from 2022–2024. The assessment considered rainwater as a supplementary source for the school’s water needs.
This technical support contributed to conservation planning by examining opportunities to capture rainfall for beneficial use and diversify water sources in a location with limited groundwater potential.

Supporting Water Conservation in Daily School Activities

Universitas Pertamina complemented technical assistance with free education on responsible water use, linking water conservation to the operation of everyday sanitation facilities. Sessions encouraged participants to use water according to need, avoid unnecessary consumption, and maintain clean shared facilities.
Students in grades 1–6 received instruction on responsible use of clean water, appropriate toilet use, handwashing, and environmental hygiene. A separate session at Barengkok Village Hall involved teachers, parent representatives, and the school committee, reinforcing their role in guiding children and supporting consistent practices at school and at home.
