This mechanism supports the University’s commitment to monitoring waste generation, identifying changes over time, and strengthening sustainable waste management practices. Food waste tracking is integrated into Universitas Pertamina’s broader waste management system, which includes waste segregation, collection, transportation, treatment, and regular performance evaluation.

The tracking mechanism covers waste generated throughout the Universitas Pertamina building, including canteens, cafeterias, food service providers, and other campus activities. The food waste component encompasses food leftovers from consumers as well as waste generated during food preparation and processing activities. To support this mechanism, Universitas Pertamina implements waste segregation throughout the campus, encouraging students, employees, canteen tenants, and other campus users to separate waste according to its characteristics.

Recycling bins on campus area

Waste management begins with segregation at the source, where waste is separated by category before being collected at the campus Temporary Waste Collection Point (TPS). The segregated waste is subsequently collected and transported daily by an appointed third-party waste management provider for further processing and treatment. The third-party provider manages the collected waste according to its respective categories, with organic waste, including food waste, undergoing biological treatment through bioconversion using Black Soldier Fly (BSF) larvae, commonly known as maggots. In this process, organic waste is utilised as a feed source for maggot cultivation, supporting resource recovery and reducing the amount of organic waste requiring final disposal.

Food waste undergoing further biological treatment remains included in the total quantity of food waste generated, as the tracking mechanism accounts for waste generation regardless of its subsequent treatment method. Food donated for human consumption, where applicable, is not classified as food waste.

Food Waste Measurement and Data Recording

Universitas Pertamina’s food waste tracking mechanism is supported by daily waste generation records compiled by the appointed third-party waste management provider. These records document the quantity of waste collected across the campus, with waste quantities reported separately according to their categories. The recorded data are consolidated into monthly reports, enabling Universitas Pertamina to monitor waste generation consistently throughout the year.

Monthly waste management report Universitas Pertamina from third party

To determine the quantity of food waste, Universitas Pertamina conducted waste composition sampling in 2025 to identify the proportion of food waste within the organic waste generated on campus. The resulting food waste percentage is applied to the recorded quantity of organic waste to estimate the amount of food waste generated. Accordingly, the reported food waste figures are derived from actual waste generation records combined with the results of the 2025 waste composition sampling, rather than from direct weighing of food waste as a separate category.

The third-party waste management provider routinely submits monthly waste management reports to the Directorate of Facilities and Infrastructure (Direktorat Sarana dan Prasarana). These reports contain detailed daily records of waste generation, disaggregated by waste category, allowing the Directorate to track waste quantities, monitor monthly changes, and maintain documented waste management records.

In addition to reporting waste generation, the third-party provider conducts waste treatment performance assessments, including the management and processing of food waste, through transparent and documented reporting. These assessments provide information on waste treatment activities and their performance, supporting Universitas Pertamina’s evaluation of waste management practices and opportunities for improvement. Through this reporting arrangement, the Directorate receives both quantitative waste generation data and information on treatment performance, establishing a consistent and traceable mechanism for monitoring campus food waste management.

Food Waste Generation and Tracking Results in 2025

This figure represents the calculated annual quantity of food waste generated from food services, including canteens and other food-related activities, as well as other sources of food waste across the campus.
