Water-Conscious Building Standards at Universitas Pertamina

Universitas Pertamina applies water-conscious building standards to minimise water use, referring to GREENSHIP Existing Building Version 1.1, developed by the Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI). Its Water Conservation criteria serve as a technical reference for managing water efficiency in existing campus buildings, where daily sanitation needs and plumbing maintenance affect freshwater consumption.
This policy was established in Circular Letter Number 0009A/UPER-WRP.4/SE/II/2025 on Responsible Water Management at Universitas Pertamina. The circular directs facility managers to apply the reference through water-efficient sanitary fixtures, consumption monitoring, leak inspection and repair, and evaluation of building water-use efficiency. It also provides for the development of alternative water sources and water reuse, subject to technical feasibility, water quality, and intended use.
The circular complements the Green Campus Management Guideline, established under Rector Regulation Number 0019A/UPER-R/PER/HK.00/X/2024. Article 2, Paragraph 11 addresses efficient clean water use and supporting water infrastructure, while Article 3, Point 3 incorporates water conservation into the university’s Green Building benchmarks.
At Griya Legita, one of the university’s main academic buildings, approximately 80 dual-flush toilets allow users to select flushing volumes according to their needs. The building also uses water-efficient washbasin faucets with an approximate flow rate of 3.6 litres per minute. These fixtures support the circular’s direction to minimise water use through the selection of efficient sanitary equipment.
Universitas Pertamina also uses water meters to obtain consumption information and inform water-use management. Technical and facility personnel inspect and maintain pipes, toilets, faucets, washbasins, and other sanitary fixtures, addressing leaks, blockages, and damaged components. The circular reinforces these practices by directing campus users to report leaks and requiring facility managers and relevant units to record water use, leakage reports, and follow-up repairs.
Beyond indoor water efficiency, Universitas Pertamina constructed biopores and infiltration wells across campus areas in 2023. Biopores facilitate rainwater infiltration into the surrounding soil, while infiltration wells collect rainwater and allow it to infiltrate into the ground. These facilities support groundwater recharge and reduce surface runoff around built areas, complementing the rainwater-infiltration provisions subsequently formalised in the Green Campus Management Guideline.
A technical study of Griya Legita used GREENSHIP Existing Building Version 1.1 to assess water conservation performance. Within the study’s scope and calculation method, freshwater consumption was calculated at approximately 4.08 litres per building user per day. This provides a quantitative reference for evaluating water-use efficiency in the building.
The circular also assigns the Sustainability Center responsibility for coordinating an evaluation of implementation at least once a year to identify improvements. Water-saving messages at points of use reinforce practical actions, including closing faucets after use and reporting leaks.
