Universitas Pertamina (UPER) delivers health outreach programmes and projects in local communities through community engagement, student-led community service, education, and applied interventions. These programmes address health and well-being issues that are closely related to access to clean water, sanitation, hygiene, and environmental health. The activities primarily engage local communities facing challenges in accessing water and sanitation services, with community members involved as recipients and, where applicable, participants in the implementation and maintenance of the solutions provided.
SABAR (Sanitasi Barengkok): Improving Water Access for Community Sanitation
Through LIGHT UP 2025, Universitas Pertamina’s annual community service programme, students work with local communities to identify and address local problems. As part of this programme, Universitas Pertamina students developed SABAR (Sanitasi Barengkok) in the Sumur Berenuk area of Barengkok Village. The programme was developed in response to the community’s limited access to reliable water sources. Based on the programme’s field identification, the community in Barengkok faces limitations in accessing suitable groundwater sources, resulting in some residents relying on water sources that are less suitable for daily sanitation needs. SABAR provided a simple water filtration system using materials and technology that can be managed locally. In addition to providing the filtration system, the programme included community education on water use, sanitation, operation, and maintenance. Residents and local community representatives were involved in using the facility and were provided with guidance to support its continued operation.
The implementation provided a direct community-level intervention related to health, sanitation and hygiene. The filtered water was reported to be clearer and was used by residents for activities such as bathing and washing. This makes SABAR a direct example of Universitas Pertamina’s health outreach programme in a local community, combining a practical intervention with education and community participation.
WATER FOR ALL!: Supporting Water, Sanitation and Health Education in the Community
Universitas Pertamina also conducts WATER FOR ALL!, a community service initiative addressing access to clean water, sanitation, and hygiene. The programme engages local communities and educational communities around the implementation area through activities that combine needs identification, practical solutions, and water, sanitation and hygiene education. The programme is designed to respond to community needs related to water and sanitation while increasing awareness of the importance of clean water, hygiene, and appropriate water management in daily life. Community members are involved in the process so that the intervention is connected to their local needs rather than being limited to the provision of infrastructure or facilities.
Through its combination of community engagement, water-related intervention, and sanitation and hygiene education, WATER FOR ALL! contributes to health and well-being at the community level. The programme demonstrates how Universitas Pertamina’s community service activities translate academic knowledge and student capabilities into practical support for local communities.
